Week 1- Ideation and Pitch

Our team brainstormed ideas for our pitch for a car commercial. We all wanted to create something that had a child-like sense of wonder, making use of fantasy elements. Some references we looked at early on were the following clips from Back to the Future and Ant-Man.



We decided to go with the idea of a toy car transforming into a real life-size car that can fly. We proceeded to collect references for the vehicle, location and time of day. I created the following concept sketches, based on previs by my teammates Elizabeth and Camilo, to figure out the colors and lighting.

Week 6- Reflection Layer Setup

This week I created another render layer to capture the reflection of the car on the windows of the building in Shot 05. I created a plane and matched its position to the position of the windows in the live-action plate. I applied a black colored aiStandardSurface shader, with 0 Roughness, to this plane- so the MergePlus node can be used in comp to add this Reflection pass. I turned off the Primary Visibility of the car geo as a Layer Override.  Since this plane was also reflecting the HDRI from the skydome light, I used light-linking so the skydome light only affected the car and not the plane. I added extra area lights to this render layer to brighten the reflection and provide enough light information for compositing. This is what the reflection pass looked like on the live-action plate.

Week 4- HDRI Test and Lighting

 My first priority this week was to address an important note from the mentors. It was pointed out that the car paint looked very ambient and the range of values between the highlights and shadows didn't have enough contrast. Initially, I thought the problem might have been with the Ai Car Paint shader and the way I was using saturated colors for Light Facing Color and Flip-Flop in Specular. But upon further inspection, with Professor Gaynor, we realized that it was because of the way the HDRI was set up in my Lookdev rig. After I used the following .hdr setup with a clamp on a geodome, the shaders looked better. I then moved on to setting up HDRIs and lighting for all the shots with the latest layout and animation. Since our team felt that Shot 05 was the highest priority shot, that's the one I approached first. Week 8- Lookdev Refinement

This week I wanted to work on refining the lookdev for the tire region of the car because it occupies considerable screen space in Shot 04 and Shot 05. I added a bump map to add some logo details and extra ridges to the camera facing side of the tire. I used aiNoise to procedurally create another bump map to break up the surface of the tire so it didn't feel uniformly smooth. Next, I added some details to the shader for the brakedisc. I created an opacity map to make the holes that would be caused by the brakes. To make circular scratches on the brakedisc, I connected aiCellNoise with Worley1 pattern to aiNoise and used it as a map for specular Rotation. This is what these lookdev updates looked like.
